Physician's overall liability reduces greatly by incorporating ePrescribing into their practice. Physicians are advised of any possible drug on drug interactions as well as drug allergy possibilities when entering the prescription details into the ePrescribing software. Physicians also receive piece of mind knowing that prescriptions will not be fraudulently altered before arriving to the pharmacy. Eprescribing software transmits the data directly to the pharmacy, bypassing patient handling completely. Physicians have access to up-to-date dispensing history of the patient. Therefore, physicians can evaluate other medications that the patient has taken or may be taking, and incorporate that into his/her decision when choosing a particular medication.
The ePrescibing software alerts a physician to any known drug interactions that the patient may be susceptible to based on the patients medication history. The patients known allergies are incorporated into the program, so the ePrescribing software will alert the physician of any allergies specific to a particular medication that he/she may be prescribing.
Before the advent of ePrescribing, fraudulently prescription alterations were taking place, and many were actually filled by pharmacists. This posed an enormous risk on the physician, although they had no control of the paper prescription once it had left his office. The ePrescribing software eliminates this liability because the medication, dose, and quantity are transmitted directly to the pharmacist. Refills are conducted in the same fashion. The pharmacist will input the refill request into the program and the physician will receive a notification that requests their review and approval. Again, this bypasses any patient handling.
The physician is also provided with insight as to what medications are covered by the patient's health insurance company. This reduces unnecessary follow-up work on the physician's part. Prior to ePrescribing, the pharmacy verified the insurance coverage and would put the responsibility on the physician in revising the prescription with a medication that was actually covered. Often times this delayed the dispensing of a medication to the patient, which ultimately delayed recovery times. It was not unusual to have patients become frustrated with the process, and simply not fill the prescription at all. By incorporating ePrescribing into their practice, physicians will recognize a great decrease in redundant busy work, and can dedicate more time interacting with the patient.
